Last August I set some goals after having a few lessons, to help improve my golf and also enjoyment playing Australia’s Top 100 golf courses. I realise that all golfers really need to live with lessons. It can only help with your game one would think.
Measuring against the targets set for the end of 2015, which I thought would be achievable, was a bit of a surprise. Since then my game has gone a little wayward. Certainly not playing enough competition games to positively impact my handicap. Things definitely need to change. This was especially evident when playing over the weekend with some strangers, all off single digits, when talk of my handicap was raised. One comment was “No way you play off that handicap”, pointing out it was way too high, making me feel like a bit of a burglar, which I definitely am not.
[su_table]DATE | HANDICAP | FAIRWAYS HIT | GIR | PUTTS |
Aug 15 | 13.6 | 37.5% | 31.6% | 33.6 |
Dec 15 Target | 11 | 45% | 42% | 31 |
Dec 15 Actual | 16.1 | 42.4% | 21.4% | 34.5 |
Jun 16 Revised | 13.1 | 45% | 37.5% | 32.5 |
Looks like there was only one slight improvement which was fairways hit. Handicap, GIR and Putts per round have all blown out, not what I was expecting at all. More time is required practicing to get anywhere near these targets. Putting a plan together to achieve these by June, including revising the targets to be a bit more achievable. Hopefully leading to more enjoyment on the courses for the WA trip.
Part of my plan is:
- Trying some of Hank Haney’s tips, in swinging a club 100 times a day, grooving the swing into memory
- Visit the range at lease once per week
- Play weekly
- Revision lesson with the coach
- Practice nightly putting at home
If this doesn’t help might have to relegate myself to being a bogey golfer at some stage. Rather scary thought and one I wish to avoid. At least for the next twenty years anyway.
