Flying With Golf Clubs

Playing the Australian Top 100 Golf courses involves quite a bit of travel. With such a big country, a lot of that is by air, so flying with golf clubs is a necessity in trying to complete the quest. Due to travelling with work, where possible, the choice is to fly with the same airline that the most benefits can be obtained.

But sometimes it just isn’t possible to fly with my preferred airline. This might be due to cost or not travelling to the required destination. Such was the case recently travelling to Ellerston. Having to fly with JetStar to Newcastle, the closest airport, it came as a great shock when looking at the charge fees for travelling with golf clubs. No longer was this fare quite as cheap. A new oversize luggage fee is being implemented for bookings and flights after 15th March 2017. This is on top of paying to have luggage in the first place. Luckily my booking came before this but it is amazing how quickly luggage costs can mount on top of the initial fare.

So for those thinking of flying with golf clubs, below is a table showing the major Australian airlines, along with one smaller one if going to King Island. This is what you maybe paying on your next trip.

[su_table]
Airline Baggage Cost Oversize Fee
JetStar Not Included $35 for 20kg $25
Qantas 1 x 23kg $0 Free
Rex 1 x 15kg $0 Free
Tiger Air Not Included $20 for 16kg $25
Virgin Australia 1 x 23kg $0 Free

Where possible I will just check the golf bag, stuffing as much as possible into it, then carry the remaining items as carry on luggage. Hopefully this will help give some insight and avoid potential bill shock when flying with golf clubs.
